Open-Air Festival on Margaret Island

Located adjacent to the Water Tower landmark, the Open-Air Theatre on Margaret Island is the sole permanent outdoor stage in Hungary, and is able to accommodate close to 3,000 spectators. The theatre, which boasts unique capabilities, has been the venue for operettas, classical ballet performances, operas and, in recent decades, rock operas and musicals. In addition to well-known Hungarian singers and musicians, numerous world-famous bands and other performers give concerts here each year.

Margaret Island in a nutshell:

Margaret Island is the most beautiful park in the Hungarian capital. Margaret, the Hungarian princess, who was later canonised, used to live here in the nunnery, which is in ruins today. UNESCO declared the island’s Water Tower, in which exhibitions are organised, as a protected building. The open-air stage on the island hosts opera and ballet performances in the summer, when the music fountain is also in operation and one can have a pleasant walk under the century-old trees.  One can enter the island only by bus or bicycle or on foot. A swimming pool, a beach, two hotels and restaurants can also be found on the island.

Tips:

Visiting the island by boat

Come to the island by boat! There are ship transfers before and after theatre performances departing from two piers on the Pest side (Jászai Mari Square and Dráva Street) and one pier on the Buda side (Szilágyi Dezső Square), taking passengers to the Margaret Island Grand Hotel or Vadaspark station. Paved paths lead from both stops to the Margaret Island Open-Air Theatre. In addition, there are sightseeing boats and boats offering buffet dinner services as well!  www.szabadter.hu

Experience of others:

"The Palatinus Lido became lot better in the past 30-35 years. The trees have grown, it is a place where you may find more nature than before. Surf bath, ping-pong tables, slippery football ground, body building tent. Corncobs, ice cream, beer without limit, wave pool, thermal. If you like it is busy, if you like it is peaceful. Hey-ho how I would enjoy the lido.. "

Magdi from Budapest

"The best solution on a hot summer day is to head to the pools of Margaret Island. And if you are there, drink a wine and soda mix (fröccs) in one of the outdoor bars."

Andrea and Mila from Slovakia

"I like to walk aronnd the city in summer, on the Danube bend, the Buda Castle and the Margaret Island. I enjoy being outside till late at night and the floodlit buildings are just beautiful.
